Bill for maintenance work to college rooms. Total payment of £21 8s 8d, and includes payment for: fixing boarding to fire place in cloisters D and same in Mr Duncan's rooms. In Mr King's rooms: take down the partition; batton the sitting room, study, bedroom and entrance lobby walls and make a door frame; fix new architraves to doors and windows; rehang sash and fix skirting in lobby; remove coal bin and mend floor. Also: laying floor and fixing shelves in Mr Morgan's gyp room. In staircase B: fit a cupboard in the gyp room; laying new floor and joists; line a wall with boarding. Also: line the walls with boarding in F staircase; work to cupboard and rehanging sash in B, Front Court; make a door and fix a cupboard in the gyp room in staircase E, no.5; mend window board and coal bin in staircase J; mend landing floor and rehang sash in no.5. Includes payment for repairing the roof in the chancel of All Saints, including cost of labour, blue slate, mortar, tiles and grey slates; also for replacing the decayed chimney pot at Harveys, Jesus Lane, including cost of labour, hair mortar, cement and chimney pot; also for building a higher tube to the same chimney. Dated 28th November and signed by D. Bradwell and sons. On reverse of bill includes list of abstracts for work done during Michaelmas 1864 to the Masters' Lodge, the college the courts etc, the chapel, the rooms the kitchen and the estates, totalling £70 11s 10d.

The second for work done in the Chapel by bricklayers to make a drain for the chapel; work to window frame; work done by carpenters to make a frame; shoring up the slats. The third for work done in the Kitchen by bricklayers to repair the stoves; opening and cleaning the cesspool; making good the paving; repairing the hot plate; work to coppers; work to drains; putting down stones; carpenter's work to prepare and fix a shelf in the larder; and also charges for wood; screws; nails; holdfasts; hods; mortar; 8 pairs of gutters; tiles; bricks; cement; labour and men. All three signed 1 December 1862 by D. Bradwell and Sons. All three total £9 16s 3d.

Invoice for Estates.

6th August 1859: Woodman's arms: Build scaffold to front and other corners of the two houses, take off the old plastering, and new lath, and plaster and stucco aforementioned. Plasterer and labourer: 6 1/2 days. Boy 3 days. 1/2 load of brick mortar. 3 bundles of lathes and nails. Nails for old lathing and stucco. 2 load of scaffold carted.

18th August: Finish the plastering of lower parts and colouring (of lower parts), strong lime colour. Plasterer and labourer, 1 1/2 day. 9 pails of colour for above and 1 load of stucco.

10th September: Mr Porchers. Ask for estimate to plaster walls of pantry. Asked for restimate to plaster walls of back kitchen and mend the other parts. Repaired top of chimney and slating. Bricklayer and labourer: 1 day. 1 load brick mortar and cement. 2 dutchess stanes and nails.

At Mr Adams, take up the floor of kitchen, leave the pipe to find the well. Take off the door, and after the well was sunk deeper, relay the floor and the paving. Bricklayer and labourer: 1 1/2 day, 8 loads brick mortar, 120 bucks. Deepen the well had to sink lower floor six inches deeper. Bricks for well, 8 loads mortar. Paid men working in the well. Carting away the rubble.

At Mr Parkers: take up floor and relay above, and door over the well. 2 bricklayers and 2 labourers 3/4 day. 8 loads bricks mortar, 120 bricks. Take up the old well, it was too small, dig and brick a new well entirely, including the brickworks and carting away the earth, and refit stone coping to area.

On back: letter from D. Bradwell and sons, confirming receipt on December 8th 1859 of £22 15 s 7d.

Fill up and around the pump with cement grout to stop the stench which arose. 4 bushels small shingles.

Finish drain and make good to walls, put in air tubes to ventilate the cesspool on the outside

Courts and precincts:
November 16 1858:

  • Work to steps after Gas fitters and in front of the paving. Mans time.
  • Open and empty drain and leafs from the pump. Repair slating over the offices. Bricklayers and labourer: 1 day, 34 dutchess (duchess) slates, nails, cement.

November 20 1858:

  • Take up the old steps front of College, build a foundation for new ones. Prepare the ends of old ones to receive above. Repair the path of front entrance. Repair the slating over the knife place. Bricklayer and labourer: 3 3/4 day, 8 hods of buck mortar, 1 1/4 bushel of cement, 1 hand cart load gravel, 8 slates and nails, 2 hods hair mortar, and plaster of Paris. For the new steps: 10 ft cube of Ketton stone, 36 ft sup. of sawing and plane face.
  • Fix the new steps and prepare ends of the old ones to receive them and alter the paving. Mason and labourer 3 days.
  • Raise ladders and repair the Hall chimney and clean out the tube, clean out the top of another chimney, clear Gutters and jobs. Bricklayer and labourer 1 1/2 day, bricks and cement.

December 1858:

  • Take up pavement and relay above with Paris to various places. Bricklayer and labourer 1 1/4 day, 1 hod of brick mortar.
  • 2nd court. Alter drain and lay in a siphon tap. Bricklayer and labourer 1/2 day, siphon tap and cement.
  • Work to floors for gas. Pebble to places and make good for plastering. Bricklayer and labourer 2 1/2 days, 2 hods brick mortar, 2 hods hair mortar, cement and plaster.

February 5 1859: Clean out and make good to drain, mens time and cement.
19 Feb 1859: Dig and enfamine and work to drain.
26 Feb 1859: Make good to drain, dig for and make a new drain to take off the overflow of water from the Bogs. Work to paving and the sill of back gates. Bricklayer and labourer 3 1/2 days. 5 hods of mortar, 30 tiles, cement and 30 bricks.

  • Repair the brickwork and put on bricks on end to the dung place, point to the pantiles. Bricklayer and labourer 1 1/2 day, 6 hods hair mortar, 1 1/2 bush cement.
  • Work to the sewer in the ditch. Bricklayer and labourer 1 day, 1 1/2 bushel of cement.

March 12 1859: Open, clean out and make good two traps. Work to drain and and trap above from the water pipes in the third court and pave over above. Bricklayers and labourers 1 day.1 glaze, siphon, trap, 3 pecks cement, 1 hod brick mortar.

May 14 1859: Make a drain at the back of chapel and other jobs. Dig and earth and lay down pieces of new pebble paving to make the entrance wider. Also lay new piece to the entrance of the garden gate. 31 yards of new paving including pebbles, gravel, and laying complete.

  • Take up and relay old paving to parts. 34 yards of paving. 1 1/2 load of paving gravel and carting.
  • The Third/3rd Court. Dig and lay in a new piece of Glaze drain and put bricks on edge to the grass plot and work to cesspool. Bricklayer and labourer 1 day, 10 ft glaze tube, 125 bricks, 1 hod brick mortar and cement.
  • Take down the four ceilings of servants water closets. Point to roof of sedge place. Open and clean out water pipes next pump and mend the wall of passage to the Buttery. Bricklayer and labourer 2 1/2 day, 4 hods hair mortar, 4 pantiles, plaster of paris, and cement.
  • Take off top of wall to servants water closet and build it higher, take off slates to the roof and prepare work to receive the new cistern. Bricklayer and labourer 2 days, 9 hods brick morter, 80 bricks and cement.
  • Put four new ceilings to water closets and repair and make good the seats, white wash the walls of above, new slating to roofs, and repair the slating to roofs of knife and shoe place and other jobs. Bricklayer and labourer 2 3/4 day, bricklayer 2 3/4 day, 2 1/2 bundle lathes and nails, 1 hod of mortar, plaster of paris, cement and whitewash.
  • New slate to roofs of water closets. 70 slates and nails and putty. Slater and labourer 1 day.
  • 1 load of dirt carting away.

College:
December 18 1858: Work to the stove in the Hall.

February 5 1859: Mr Oakleys, raise ladders, take off old top of chimney and fix wind guard. Bricklayer and labourer 3/4 day. 1 hod hair mortar and cement.

  • Staircase next the chapel. Repair walls after gas fitters.

April 2 1859: Work to chimney to cure from smoking. Bricklayer and labourer 1 1/4 day, 2 hods brick mortar, cement, 2 drain tiles and hair mortar.

April 23 1859: Work in room to hearth stone which sunk.

July 16 1859: Repair the plastering to staircases and passages in the first court. also repair the plastering in staircase in cloisters. Bricklayer and labourer 2 days, 4 hods hair mortar, 1 hod putty, laths and nails, 3 pecks of plaster of paris.

  • Mr Westmorlands rooms, take down the ceiling entrance to above, put up a new ceiling and clear away rubbish. Raise ladders and work to top of chimney. Bricklayer and labourer 1/2 day. 3 hods brick mortar, cement, and 1 hod hair mortar.
  • Buttery, repair stone door joints and work to where door shuts against. Third (3rd) court, lay the paving against the pump. 6ft 4in sup. stone and cement.
  • Repair to walls. Bricklayer and labourer 1/2 day. 2 hods mortar and cement.
  • Repair the hearth and jobs.
  • Cement and bricklayer and labourer 1/4 day.
  • Whitewash the ceiling and walls of above.

Kitchen:
July 16 1859: Examine chimney, build work in side of above to stop the smoke issuing into Mr Jowell's room. Plaster to inside of the round iron, work of smoke stack. Briclayer and labourer 2 days, 8 hods brick mortar, 30 titles, candles, 6 hods of hair pargeting, paid men extra for working in chimney.

  • Take down the two coppers and rebuild and new furnace, work to hotplate, fasten stone in larder and other jobs. Bricklayer and labourer 3 1/4 days, 13 hods brick mortar, 3 hods hair mortar, 15 welch (welsh) fire bricks, 30 tiles.

March 19 1859: Point to several lights. Bricklayer and labourer 3/4 day. Plaster and cement.

Receipt for bricklaying and carpentry work. Includes work to Master's Lodge: taking up old floor and laying new one; examine flue and work to hot plate; cut away brick work to hot plate and fix a new damper in the flue.

Work to the college: point windows; clear tops of chimneys; work to top of Hall chimney. Take down cornice of room and work to ceiling; repair the ceiling and walls of passage and cement lower part. White the ceiling and colour walls; cut out lights in the Hall and point same; work to staircase ceiling and cement round doorway. Carpenter's work: make a trap door to the roof of Porters' Lodge, fix a slide board to [?].

Work to Courts and precincts. New build work to the side of a door, work to wall and fixing glass on same. Work to wall in backyard: clean bricks and cart them away from the old wall near the new Church into College grounds. Cleaning out drain; work to outhouse; open and clean out five traps and cesspools. Open and clean out drain from the pump and make good as was quite full. Open drain in the last court, found it quite full and opened it all along the court to clean it out; made good and arch over same and lay pebbling. Dig out and lay a new piece of 9 inch tubular drain from the old drain across the grass plot and into the sewer of the servants water closets. Repair and lay the paving in the cloisters. Open and clean out cross drains and cesspools and cover over same, re-laying pebble paving. Take up the drain from the pump and paving. Work to water closet. Open drains and found only dry bricks and full cesspools; lay in drains to provide drainage for whole court. Work to and connect drainage and unstop drains in garden; carrying new drainage system to the side of college and connecting it the old system. Also taking up and newly paving part of the court next to the from gates and the entrance to cloisters.

Carpenter's work: fixing iron bars to frame, assisting with Fire Engine [?]; mend the skirting and fix fillets and work to door in the Porters' Lodge. Fixing two new seats, risers and bearers to the Fellows' Water Closets. Also making good the skirting and casing the pipes. Mend the fence next to the Common; mend the fence in the Close and fix and tar hooping. Take down seats and risers in young men's water closets and mend casing. Mend fence on the Common. Refix seats to Water closet. Mend the gate leading to the Close and the adjoining fence.

Work to the kitchen: work to hot plates; mend the paving in the Larder; bed[?] mortar and pestle; take off hot plate and repair the flue; take up stones in scullery, clean out drain arch over the scullery and relay the stones; work to range and chimney; work to new furnace.

Carpenter's work: repair chopping block and affix new legs; fix bearer to dresser; new face dresser plane over dresser in pantry, prepare and affix a rack for spits. Refix shelf in Larder and move a cupboard there; prepare and fix a new shelf, make a new end to the fire screen and make a dust box.

Also includes cost of materials: floor bricks, bricks, mortar, sand, plaster of Paris, cement, tiles, tubes, bends, nails, deal, bearers and screws, tar, tenter hooks, oak.

Includes abstract on the final page of the receipt breaking the cost down into Master's Lodge, The Courts and Precincts, the College and the Kitchen.
