Scope and content

Bill for purveyance work carried out by C.M. Bidwell between December 1868 and June 1870 relating to college-owned farms, their buildings, and their terms of lease.
Shelford: work includes interviewing Dr Corrie at Jesus in consequence of Mr Henry Hurrell not agreeing to take the farm at Shelford on the terms required by the college. Hurrell eventually agreed to take the farm for £745 in 1869. Also wrote to Dr Corrie saying he did not require a lease but would take the farm as a yearly tenant.
Horne Court Manor: valuation and report on Horne Court Manor Farm near Godstone, Surrey, with a plan showing the revised quantity to be 417 acres, 1 rood, and 15 perches (instead of 399:0:39 as per old plan) in the occupation of Mr John Haines, estimating rental value at £223 18s, with the tenant paying tithe rent and parochial rates. Also reports on the state of the buildings and the repairs necessary, including timber and drainage. Also reported upon a proposed exchange between the rector of Horne and the College, advising that the College give up the land for the rectory to be built, but that the College gain two acres in exchange for one, therefore benefitting both parties. Wrote to Messrs Francis, Webster, and Riches and sent them details of arrangements, with a correct schedule of the lands for them to propose a fresh lease. Interview at Cambridge at Messrs Francis, Webster, and Riches' office with Mr Haines to discuss the shooting and other covenants which were inserted in the draft lease to which Mr Haines objected. Later discussed the same issue with Mr Haines in London and noted the several alterations required by him in the covenants. Perused and corrected lease and then saw Dr Corrie and Messrs Francis, Webster, and Riches about it. Correspondence with Mr John Chilton from the Commissioners of Woods and Forrests about the Surrey customs re. woods and shaws, and wrote to Messrs Stenning and Haines with Mr Chilton's opinion and advice thereon. Later wrote to Mr Haines and made an appointment.
Total cost of Bidwell's work: £31 10s.
