Forma compositionum cartarum, etc

A legal formulary; M. R. James's no. 18. Spine title: Forma Compositionum Cartarum Obligacionum Acquietanciarum Indenturarum Libellorum et Appellacionum cum aliis pro studio Abbatis. Includes wills dated 1399 and 1403. The first quire is missing. The flyleaves come from one or two unfinished musical service-books (14-15C), one leaf containing antiphons for the feast of the Assumption.

Alphabetical list of members with brief biographical details (preceded by a note about its composition and guide to abbreviations used); in Freddy Brittain's hand but with later additions by Muriel Brittain. There follow lists of those who matriculated in 1849 or 1859, and of those from before 1849 who were in residence later. The volume also contains: copies of the Statutes of 1841 and 1861; names of incumbents of College livings since 1849; extracts from Cooper's Annals of Cambridge for 1850-56; extracts from the Report of the Royal Commission of 1852; biographies of Jesus men who were Fellows in 1849, ex-Fellows in 1849, and those otherwise especially notable from the second half of the 19C; and finally brief notes about rowing, covering 1849-70. On p. 231 is a pasted-in Who's Who entry for historian Herbert G. Wood, with a note about his death in 1963; at p. 240 are two newscuttings of obituaries for Sir Owen Beasley and Col. B. C. This folder of letters are addressed to Frederick Brittain and are from a variety of correspondents. They cover a number of different subjects including thank you letters from students who were tutored by FB. They also include:

18th October 1926 - Letter from M H Benbow about the Archdeacon's Horse [this letter was reprinted on page 66 of 'Fifty Years At Jesus. The Diaries of Frederick Brittain' edited by Muriel Brittain]

5th June 1927 - Reference from O. H. Prior, the Professor of French in the University of Cambridge, recommending FB for the Lectureship in French at Durham University. Attached is a cutting from the newspaper of the job advert.

6th March 1928 - Letter from Arthur Gray stating that Heffer had spoken to him about his (FB's) book on St Giles and that although he had not seen it yet he thought it would be very good based on what FB had written before. He ends the letter saying "I think your life's business should be literature, especially Italian".

The poem was first published in 1939, under the title Rejoice in the Lamb), and production notes and programmes for unidentified plays, concerts and other events

Renewal of Lease of Nos. 29-34 Lower Park Street

Letters concerning renewing the lease for Nos. 29-34 Lower Park Street. These had been leased to John Death for 40 years from 29th September 1876. Following his death the trustees under his will had assigned the lease to Mrs Anna Maria Folkard [by an Assignment dated 3rd July 1903]. The lease was due to expire in September 1916 and Mrs Folkard approached the College via her solicitors to see if they would grant a renewal of the lease and if so on what terms. There was a proposal that Mrs Folkard give up the lease of property she held in Jesus Lane [Nos. 25and 26] in return for an Annuity and renewal of the Lower Park Street properties but this was rejected by the College Council

Complaint's about Lawrence's Garage, 1928-1932

(4) Letter from the Bursar to Francis & Co (College solicitors) informing them that the College Council had agreed to the surrender of the lease by Miss A. Briggs, to relieve her of her liability for dilapidations, to pay her £20 and to pay for the legal costs of the transaction
(5) Letter from the Bursar to H. M. Inspector of Taxes confirming that following the surrender of the lease the premises were let to Messrs Greene King & Sons Limited for 21 years from Ladyday 1932. He confirms that he has no knowledge of Messrs Austin & Co in connection with the premises but assumes they may be sub-tenants of the lessees

Also includes: a card for Bronowski signed by people at the launch at the Royal Society (26 Apr 1973), a copy of Bronowski's reply to Wilton Dillon, and a list of suggested invitations for the V.I.P. showing of 'The Ascent of Man' at the Royal Society.
