Comprises various drafts and final versions of a plan for the Salk Institute, with internal correspondence about the plan and letters from experts outside of the Institute who were asked to provide feedback on drafts. Bronowski was responsible for the plan alongside Jonas Salk and Renato Dulbecco. The plan was to consist of: a statement explaining uniqueness of the Institute; an account of the achievements of the Fellows; an account of the areas of research which the Institute would move into, and why it would be most effective in those areas; and an academic plan.
Includes: a draft entitled 'The Salk Institute: Why and How' (25 Jan 1967, by Augustus Kinzel); notes on current and proposed work by the Institute on the understanding of control mechanisms in living organisms (by Dulbecco and Salk, 20 Feb 1967); a memorandum from Jonas Salk on a discussion between Resident and Non-Resident Fellows [ideas for work of the Salk Institute] on 14 Feb 1967; and a copy of a letter to Basil O'Conner from Jonas Salk requesting a meeting with O'Conner and other National Foundation staff to discuss closer collaboration with the Salk Institute and the Institute's plans.
Also includes letters on proposed programmes of research at the Salk Institute and offering advice from: Benson E. Ginsburg (Behavior Genetics Laboratory, The University of Chicago); I. Charles Kaufman (Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, California); James M. Sheldon, Jr. (Assistant to the President, Rollins College, Florida); Richard L. Bartemeier (Medical Director, The Seton Psychiatric Institute, Baltimore, Maryland).
Additionally includes a letter from Isaac Kleinerman (Producer, 'The 21st Century', CBS News) on plans for a television programme on the Salk Institute in 'The 21st Century' series.
