Scope and content
Letter from Liz Pirie with attachment, in manuscript, one folio (recto & verso), dated 9 July 1979, thanking IS for sending a copy of his paper in NC 1978 but dealing chiefly with the Coppergate find from York, Liz Pirie notes that, contrary to initial impressions, the object is "very definitely lead", as shown under x-ray fluorescence analysis in Bradford. It weighs 71.952g (1077 grains), which seems unnecessarily large for trial piece. Peter Sawyer wondered whether it might have been a weight of some sort. The question remains as to the dies. Liz Pirie says that she hasn't managed to track down any coins struck from the same dies, but she wonders why the piece has turned up at York when the style more closely resembles that of Chester. The attachment consists in a photograph of the object, enlarged, with the following on the verso: York Archaeological Trust, 47 Aldwark, York YO1 2BX, 090459777; Photographer: Mike S. Duffy LRPS; Negative Number: 797152; Caption: Coppergate, York, 1979 (EJEP's note)
