Scope and content

Copy of a letter from William Lee to Richard Falkiner, typescript, single page, dated 5 October 1970, with manuscript note in lower left margin that reads: "Wm Lee was an eminent jeweller and silversmith in York until his retirement in the late fifties", signed with monogram of Richard Falkiner. In the letter, William Lee recalls the purchase of the gold coin, which had "been dug up in either a garden or field at Stamford Bridge, near York". He says that "the wife of the farmer who found the coin took it to the Yorkshire Museum for identification and the Keeper George Wilmott sent her to me". He further says that he would have been able to supply the name [of the finder] had he still been in business, but he retired more than ten years earlier and destroyed his records.
