Scope and content

Letter from Veronica Smart, in typescript, single page, dated 8 July 1993, expressing great interest in IS's paper in the latest BNJ on moneyers in the 1130 Pipe Roll, especially the observation that the proportion of Norman names seemed lower among moneyers than among the general population. She says that she has written a commentary on moneyers' names for Yvonne Harvey's corpus that remains, like the corpus, unpublished but arrives at same conclusion. She wonders whether a possible explanation for the discrepancy may lie in the hereditary nature of the moneyers' office. She provides reasons for her doubts about IS's conflation of the names Spraceling and Sperling, and she wonders about examples of G for Q.
