Letter from Rupert Bruce-Mitford with copy of the letter from IS to which he was responding:
(a) letter from Rupert Bruce-Mitford, in typescript, dated 11 November 1976, in response to a letter from IS about the identification of a lyre-shaped object on the reverse of a particular tremissis (Sutherland, pl. II.4). Rupert Bruce-Mitford answers that "if it bears any reference to lyre it would certainly be to the classical type" and not to "the Germanic lyre as we would have it in Anglo-Saxon graves", which "it in now way resembles". The coin, he says, is without provenance, but its apparently low gold content may suggest a date in the second half of the seventh century.
(b) copy of a letter from IS to Rupert Bruce-Mitford, in typescript, dated 9 November 1976, asking about the identification of a lyre-shaped object on the reverse of a particular tremissis (Sutherland, pl. II.4).
