Scope and content

The three items include a letter from Jørgen Steen Jensen, the reply of Ian Stewart and a card from JSJ bearing a coin image. The letter from JSJ, dated 2 October 1978 (a), is in typescript, thanking IS for his letter of 12 September. He mentions an enclosed photograph of a coin described as "type Valdemar II (1202-1241), Ribe, Hauberg 37, found in the church of Vester Starup some twenty years ago (sign. FP 2508.3)", no longer attached to the letter, adding that it weighs 0.65g and is known only from single finds, not from hoards, which complicates the precise dating of the coin. In a separate matter, JSJ discounts the theory of IS that Thomsen 2555 has a Scandinavian origin and enumerates his reasons but also suggests other authorities with whom to consult, namely Dr Brita Malmer (for Sweden) and Dr Kolbjørn Skaare (for Norway). The reply of IS, in carbon-copy typescript, dated 9 October 1978 (b), is attached. In the reply, IS thanks JSJ for the photographs that he sent. He also mentions that he had sent another letter to JSJ about an English penny from the Ribe hoard and expresses his gratitude for the comments of JSJ about Thomsen 2555. The card from Jørgen Steen Jensen, with manuscript note dated 21 December 197[8] that reads simply "here is the photo of Ribe 1911, no. 303"; the photo was presumably attached, which may account for a tear above the writing. The image opposite is of a Dano-Norwegian coin dated 1618, which has no relevance to the Ribe hoard.
