Letter from Jeffrey North, in typescript, single page, dated 14 June 1996, thanking IS for forwarding a polaroid of an Edward III farthing with a letter from Peter Woodhead and returning both the polaroid and letter as requested. JJN acknowledges that the minor denominations of Edward III are very difficult to classify, owing in part to their rarity and the paucity of illustrations, and he notes the need for a detailed study of the coinage of the reign. He does necessarily disagree with PW's suggestion that the farthing belongs to class G, but he notes that the letter X is unusual for the class. JJN continues with discussion of other matters, namely the poor reading of the Edward class 1c penny on the frontpiece of Portable Antiquities and his work on the classification of all Irish coinages of 1279 to 1338.
The letter from JJN was coupled with aforementioned the letter of Peter Woodhead, in manuscript, dated 29 May 1996, and another from Martin Allen, in typescript, dated 1 August 2001, which are catalogued separately (JCPP/Stewartby/1/1/WOODHEAD/1996/1 & JCPP/Stewartby/1/1/ALLENM/2001/2), plus the page proof of Lord Stewartby's note on 'London mint accounts, 1399-1402', Numismatic Chronicle, vol. 162 (2002), p. 50 (p. 373 in the published version), which is catalogued with the letter from Martin Allen.
