      Note

The hoard to which JPM refers in his letters of 20 & 27 July is the Wainfleet (Croft Bank) hoard, Lincolnshire, which consisted in 383 coins (380 pence and three cut half-pence), was found in 1990, not 1993. In another letter dated only 12 December (JCPP/Stewartby/1/1/MASS/----/-), JPM refers to "that day in September 1993 when I secured all those Wainfleet coins". The letters of 20 & July therefore must antedate September 1993.
