Scope and content

Letter from J. P. Birkett to William French, 19th October 1844. Written from Jesus College. Still can't find the Dean of Ely. Last person who thought he knew where the Dean was, was Hopkins. The weather was too bad for Woodham and Gibson to travel to Ely to find the Dean. Still thinks either Austin or Gates would be suitable for the vacant felllowship. He would happy to make an experiment of appointing a Trinity man or Johnian or someone from Peterhouse or Pembroke from the smaller Colleges. But there is plenty of choice of good candidates. Wood is coming up next week for term. The landlord of the Crown is anxious to pay his rent so Birkett directed him to pay it to Rowe. Hopes the Master's health improves.
