Scope and content

Letter from Edward Maltby to William French, written from 14 Old Square, Lincoln's Inn. Mentions his wife is still ill but looking forward to Dr. French and Mrs. French's visit. He was at Caius Lodge but wasn't able to visit French because his wife's health was getting worse. He's been here (Old Square, Lincoln's Inn?) with her for six weeks in the hope of getting some relief from the shill of Sir. H. Halfred (?) and Mr. Brodie. Unfortunately his wife's complaint has not been identified by any doctors and so they are not sure what to prescribe her. Asks for information about the society on behalf of Mr. Nolan, one of their Benchers. Notes that the society has a claim against it with regard parochial rates. The outcome of the trial could affect other law societies as well as the colleges in the two universities with regard liability to pay rates. Maltby therefore lists Nolan's questions that he would like answered with regard what Jesus College does in respect of such rates. He would have asked someone else but didn't know anyone else in the University other than French who he felt he could ask. Mentions that he is to Christen Alderman's child on Friday, Lent Gifford one of the spousers.
