Scope and content

Letter from Charles Green to William French, 22nd June 1838. Written from Burgh Castle. Nearly three years since French and Mrs. French visited Green and his wife at Burgh Castle manse. Please visit to see them, their children and the thriving condition of the village, the improved roads and setting up of finger-posts so that the traveller be under no apprehension of losing a wheel or missing his irons. In particular, however, he asks whether French would be willing to visit to Christen their youngest child. Although they have a great many more children and attendants since French last visited, they have a spare room with a double bed for the accommodation of old friends. Also would like to see Anna and Valence, French's daughters, John if still in French's service or his successor if not. Sent his letter via Mr. Alexander Cory of Pembroke College whose father is in Green's congregation and who is a great enthusiast for improvements within the parish. Red wax seal with the name Elizabeth on it.
