Will of John Grenelane

Testator wishes to be buried in St Andrew's church outside Barnwell Gate (St Andrew the Great). He bequeathes to the high altar of the above church in lieu of forgotten tithes and oblations 10s. To the priest assisting at his obsequies 12d, and to any other clerk at the discretion of his executors 12d. His executors are to provide an honest chaplain to celebrate Mass in the said church for 10 years after his decease for his soul and for these of his benefactors. He bequeathes to every convent of mendicant friars in Cambridge 10s. To the fabric of a certain solar (gallery) in the church of Haddenham, Isle of Ely, called the Bedeloft 20s. To Isabel his wife the tenement in Cambridge that they live in and the 3 small shops adjoining it, situated in the ward of Preacher's Street, with all his arable in the fields of Cambridge for the term of her life. She is to keep and provide for his anniversary. To Margery, his daughter, the newly built tenement in Preachers' ward, part of which is in the occupation of John Aleyn, bladesmith, and also the tenement which the testator acquired from the executors of Robert Brigham, situate in Cambridge Market, in the occupation of John Sterne, cutler. Also she is to have the reversion of the tenement he has left to his wife Isabel for her life; when Margery inherits it she is to keep and provide for his anniversary as long as she lives. To John (his stepson), son of Margaret, the testator's late wife, he bequeathes all the land, rents and services which he owns in the parish of Hamylden, Bucks., to hold on lease for his life from the aforesaid Margery: if she should take possession of them, then the executors are to withhold and give to John the value of the annual rent of the Hamyldon tenements out of the Cambridge tenements bequeathed to Margery. To Isabel, his wife, towards the expenses of his anniversary £10; also to Isabel for life all his utensils, jewelry, plates etc., and after her death to his daughter, Margery. If Margery marries during the lifetime of Isabel, she is to have a reasonable portion of the furniture, etc. To John, son of Margaret, 40s and 10 marks out of the 47 marks that Walter Attewell owes him. To Thomas de Hanchech 40s and 10 marks out of the sum owing from Attewell. To Robert Grenelane 40s and to John, his son, 40s. Testator appoints as his executors his widow Isabel, John, son of Margaret, Robert Grenelane, Thomas de Hanchech and William Boore, to whom he leaves a tenement situate near the King's Watermill of Cambridge to sell and apply the proceeds to pious uses. Also all his cash and any owing to him, and his chattels, except as disposed of as aforesaid.
