'The Experience of Creation' was prepared to be presented at a meeting of the International Council for Philosophy and Humanistic Studies (CIPSH) of UNESCO in Rio de Janeiro (12 Sep 1973). Bronowski cancelled his attendance due to illness. The paper was published in 'Diogenes' (journal of the Council for Philosophy and Humanistic Studies).

The paper begins with a summary of the contributions of three antiquarian scholars: Mark Noble (fl. 1780), originally of Birmingham; William Hylton Dyer Longstaffe (fl. 1863-1867); Canon J. T. Fowler (fl. 1912). The paper then summarises more recent research on the Durham mint in the fifteenth century.
