Ian Ernest Humphreys was born on 20 July 1916 in London to Ernest Graham and Agnes Clegg. He attended Westminster School, London from 1930 to 1935 and was admitted to Jesus College in October 1935 to study Economics (1st Class Division II Economic Tripos Part I 1936, 2nd Class Division II Economic Tripos II 1938). He was involved with the Jesus College Boat Club, winning the Fairbairns Cup in 1937; was the Head of Lents in 1938; and regularly went to the Henley Royal Regatta.
After leaving Jesus College, he joined the stockbroking firm Gaskell & Co and served as a Royal Artillery Captain during the Second World War between 1939 to 1945. He married Maureen Murray Wood on the 30 May 1942 and died on 12 January 1966 after a very short illness. He was known by his friends to be a quiet man of a gentle disposition.
