Scope and content
Comprises correspondence, with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, mainly relating to Bronowski being visiting Professor of Biomedical Sciences and delivering 2 lectures for the McNair lecture series on 'Man's appraisal of himself' (2-3 Apr 1968). Correspondence also relates to the possible publication of the lectures but Bronowski withdrew his offer for the University press to publish them.
Correspondents include Walter Hollander Jr. (Associate Professor of Medicine, Assistant to the Dean), Isaac M Taylor (Dean) and Lambert Davis (Director, University of North Carolina Press).
The file also includes: earlier correspondence inviting Bronowski to speak at the fourth national conference of the National Council of the Arts in Education (Philadelphia, Aug-Sep 1965) and to address the 1966 Carolina Symposium (both declined); a University notice announcing that Bronowski would be delivering the McNair lectures; itineraries for Bronowski's visit (1-6 Apr 1968); and a "speaking engagement" information sheet [made for the file].
Additionally includes an annotated typescript and annotated proofs of 'Protest and Prospect' (May 1970 & 1971), a list of books [nominated for the National Book Awards which Bronowski was acting as a judge for], and photocopies of pages from 'The Autobiography of Bertrand Russell' marked as for the McNair lectures.
