Comprises: photocopies and reprints of articles by others; typed research notes for programme 9 and specifically on "biochemical clues to man's heredity"; handwritten notes by Bronowski on relevant pages from books on Darwin, Kepler, Mendelism, Alfred Wallace, and on Pasteur's Laboratory and the Malay Archipelago; and a one-page outline for programme 9 entitled "What is life?: The Origins of Life and the Path of its Evolution".

Also includes: a list of captions for chapter 9 [for book]; a memo from David Paterson [BBC] to Bronowski on experiments [carried out by] Leslie Orgel, with Bronowski's own notes about the experiment; a note on [a chemistry experiment] from Dr R Sanchez (the Salk Institute); an illustration of "plate giving the musical notation of the songs of six kinds of birds"; and 2 black and white photographs on Tierra del Fuego (from the Royal Geographical Society archives).
