Scope and content

Comprises correspondence between Bronowski, Rita Bronowski, WGBH television, WNET television, Aubrey Singer (controller of BBC-2) and John Stringer (head of business, co-productions, BBC), with file notes by Sylvia Fitzgerald.

Subjects include: WGBH (who were to broadcast 'The Ascent of Man' on PBS, Public Service Broadcasting) wanting to change the title sequence to exclude the drawing of a foetus by Leonardo da Vinci; additional short films being made to be shown alongside 'The Ascent of Man' programmes in the United States in order to fill a time slot (one of these films was of Anthony Hopkins reading a poem by Bronowski); and WGBH borrowing the Taung child skull from 'The Ascent of Man' programmes for use in the additional films being made.

Also includes: a letter from Anthony Hopkins; the Salk Institute Newsletter number 5 containing an article about Bronowski completing 'The Ascent of Man'; a file note on images for publicity in TV pages; a note that 'The Ascent of Man' was to be shown on KCET-Channel 28 (Los Angeles) and KPBS - Channel 15 (San Diego); a list of people who appeared in the short introductory films produced by WGBH; and a copy of a telegram sent to Alan Sleath (BBC) containing a review of 'The Ascent of Man' in the New York Times.
