Scope and content

Letter from W. C. Walters to William French, written from Gray's Inn Square. Replies with regard a legal question French appears to have posed to him, apparently about property given to the College by Bishop Alcock. 'Hence the founder of the Nunnery of St. Rhadegund is the founder of Jesus College'. He has copied relevant deeds in the College's Treasury including those from the reigns of Stephen, Henry II, Edward I and Edward II. Also mentions he consulted John Sherman's 'Collegii Praeseidentis' of 1664. States that the first property to be given to the nunnery was given by Eustace the son of King Stephen or by the Bishop of Ely out of the possessions of the church of Ely. Also states that undoubtedly the land on which the College Chapel stands and indeed the name of St. Rhadegund was given by Malcolm IV of Scotland. Fragments of black wax seal.
