Letter from Thomas Gatty to William French, 26th May 1827. Written from Charterhouse Square. Sorry that he can't make every proceeding in person relating to the University and the gaol bill. He was in Hastings when he wrote to the vice chancellor pressing for distinct instructions and when Mr. Hore's proposal was adapted in that both sides should agree on terms between themselves as much as possible before things go to the committee. A meeting of Messrs Alderson Starkie and Stocks accordingly took place on the day before the committee. It was understood that the terms of the exemption clause had been determined at Cambridge but Messrs Alderson and Starkie objected and asked for a day's postponement. Mr. Hore refused this saying they knew what was being discussed before the meeting. The bill, by the advice of Alderson and Starkie is likely to be refused today.
