Scope and content
Written from Brandeston, Wickham Market, Suffolk. Broadhurst says he wants to replace the church roof in 'your parish of Cretingham' (does not seem to have been a College living). The roof is presently made of lead which is not good. It would cost £150 to replace with lead, however, if they could sell the lead this would allow for all necessary repairs to be made and for the roof to be replace with slate. Explains why slate is preferable to lead. The chancel is tiled. Easier to maintain a slate roof. The parishioners have a respectable surveyor and slater, both from Stowmarket, to do the work. Will also apply to archdeacon Berners for his opinion. A quick response is requested as half the roof had been taken off this week as the parishioners thought they could do the work themselves before realising how bad a state of repair the roof was in. The roof inside is an old carved oak one and very handsome. New rafters might be required but these should be made to the old pattern.
