Scope and content

Letter from Stuart Rigold, in typescript, single page, dated 29 April 1964, providing cover for "long-promised offprints", though most of the letter deals with an imitation "Davidic double sterling" of IS and its issuing authority, who SER identifies as Arnold of Oreye, lord of Rummen and heir to Looz and Chiny. Arnold imitated a variety of coins, including Edwardian sterlings, Flemish gors au lion, botdraegers (i.e. double groats), moutons and other gold pieces. SER describes IS's coin as "rare if not inédit". According to SER, Arnold "held Rummen from 1331", though his coins all appear to date from "between 1361 and 1365". For bibliography, he suggests Chautard, pp. 86 & 92; Engel & Serrure III, p. 1107; and the sale of the Zutphen hoard (Schulman 28, 31 March 1960), though he says that IS's coin "is not among its rarities".
