Letter from Stewart Lyon (with unsigned copy of the same), in typescript, single page, dated 27 January 2002, with six attachments. The letter is cover for a draft of the joint chapter the CSSL and IS were preparing for Patrick Wormald's book on the reign of Athelstan (see JCPP/Stewartby/1/1/WORMALD/2002/1), two versions of which are attached. There are seven attachments overall, including the two draft chapters. These are:
(a) yellow post-it note, manuscript, dated from Ardraeth on 27 October [2002]. The note suggests that the original letter originally went missing and was re-sent, possibly with one of the versions of the draft chapter; see attachments (b) and (c).
(b) draft chapter, typescript, eleven pages on six folios (recto & verso), entitled "Coinage in Athelstan's reign", [by] Stewart Lyon and Lord Stewartby, dated 27 January 2002, with footnotes at the bottom of the relevant page.
(c) draft chapter, typescript, fourteen pages (recto only), entitled "Coinage in Athelstan's reign", [by] Stewart Lyon and Lord Stewartby, undated, with notes integrated into text in a smaller font.
(d) table, typescript, two pages on two folios (recto only), entitled "Athelstan shrine type", dated 31 January 2002, listing 29 examples of the type (including one missing) with respective moneyers, references, legends, notes, weights and die identifiers; there is a manuscript note in the upper right corner of the first page indicating that the list "Does not include the Vale of York hoard".
(e) table, typescript, single page, entitled "Towns named on pence of Athelstan", dated 27 March 1999, providing an alphabetical list of mint towns with their respective number of moneyers known for Athelstan and the number of these probably known for Edward.
(f) set of manuscript notes, in the hand of IS, undated, related to the coinage of Athelstan; there is one folio of yellow lined paper and four folios of white lined paper (all recto only).
(g) photocopies of an excerpt from Christopher N. L. Brooke, The Saxon and Norman Kings, pp. 118-125, in which Athelstan is described as "the Pierpont Morgan of his age", an avid collector of books, works of art, artefacts and relics.
