Copy of letter from Stewart Lyon to Veronica Smart, typescript, single page, dated 9 February 2002, with attachment, copy, typescript, two pages on one folio (recto & verso), also dated 9 February 2002. In the letter, CSSL states that he is drafting a chapter with Ian [Stewart] on the coinage of Athelstan for a volume on the reign to be edited by Patrick Wormald. He would like to include something on the origins of moneyers and asks Veronica Smart whether she would be happy to help. The attachment, entitled "Moneyers of Athelstan by geographical area", provides a list of moneyers during Athelstan's reign according to region. He hopes that VS will be able to provide a brief assessment for each group. He notes that he has left out the shrine type, except for York where Regnald was moneyer, but he names the other moneyers for these coins, which he says make up a "curious group". The description of the shrine type as such, he adds, is due to the fact that the structure has no door but has a relatively large roof and stands on a base or plinth. He dates the type to before about 927-928 but says that its significance is obscure because it's too early to associate it with Athelstan's visit to the shrine of St Cuthbert if the visit has any connection with his journey to Scotland in 934. There is no salutation but there is a manuscript note in the upper right corner of the first page that reads: "Letter to Veronica Smart".
