Scope and content

Copy of a letter from Stewart Lyon to Mark Blackburn, typescript, four pages on four folios, dated 28 March 1998, concerning the Appledore hoard and the dating the heavy and light expanding-cross issues. CSSL takes issue with Gareth Williams' claim, as expressed by MASB, that the hoard showed the heavy issue to have been before the light one. Over the ensuing pages, CSSL presents his counter-argument. He notes that he is sending copies of the letter to Ian [Stewart] and Hugh [Pagan?], and that he would be happy for MASB to copy it to Gareth Williams if he thought it appropriate. There is a manuscript note in the upper right corner, in CSSL's hand, which reads "Copy for Ian Stewart – Comments welcomed! Stewart". There is also a yellow "post-it" note from Stewart [Lyon] to Ian [Stewart], in manuscript, dated 29 March 1998, serving in the place of cover letter, in which CSSL states that "quite a few Cnut coins, doubtless from the hoard", were being displayed by minor dealers at Coinex at Chester. He also says that he acquired a LSC of Dover that is part of an inter-mint die chain involving one obverse die with reverses of Cambridge, London, Stamford and DERP as well as Dover.
