Scope and content

Letter from Stewart Lyon, in typescript, single page, dated 9 June 1980, referring to a chat that he had with Simon Keynes when he was in Cambridge the week before during which came up information relevant to the chronology of the mint at York. In 948-949, after Eric's first expulsion, Eadred had sufficient authority "to be named in charters as king of the Anglo-Saxons and 'imperator' of the Northumbrians". The implication is that Ingelgar might have minted for Eadred not only in 946-947 but also in 948-949 and perhaps in 954-955, too. CSSL also says that Simon Keynes appraised him of his meeting with IS in which he suggested that it would be helpful for historians to have "a critique of Dolley's sexennial hypothesis, with particular reference to the the 'Hand' types, for Anglo-Saxon England. CSSL says that he noted their obligation to Christopher [Blunt] to complete their work on the mid-tenth century coinage but suggests to IS that they look at the question again later in the year. In conclusion, he turns to the "Douglas [Farman] fragment" and refers to correspondence with Christopher in which he justifies putting it early on the grounds that PWCB [Philip William Carlyon-Britton] was able to read "the Cununc title and some form of MINTER" before the coin further disintegrated.
