Scope and content

Letter from Peter Seaby, manuscript, two pages on one folio, dated 7 May 1980, providing cover for an attached paper in typescript that he is sending to IS, with whom he says he would have liked to discuss the paper beforehand, especially his brief comments on the Scottish issues. He invites comments on the paper, noting that, if it is worth publishing, it will require considerable editing and revision. He suspects that the "flag" pennies were issued c. 1146-1147 around the time of the Second Crusade. He notes that the "flag" coins normally read STIEFNE, which appears to confirm Robert Seaman's dating of the cross-moline group of English pennies to c. 1145-1147. He also mentions several other points on which he would like to learn IS's opinion. The draft typescript is catalogued separately (JCPP/Stewartby/5/2/SEABYP/1980/1).
