Scope and content
Letter from Michael Metcalf, manuscript, one folio (recto & verso), dated 20 April 1983, commenting upon IS's "extremely stimulating and distinguished [Offa?] paper". He says that the "general historian would be interested and grateful" if he were to pursue his conclusions "into realms of monetary circulation" by mapping out the single finds. He recommends stressing "the general point that the attribution of nearly everything to Canterbury" accords with the notion that coinage was still focused narrowly on the south-east. He refers to the question of whether there was one [moneyer named] "Eoba" or two, stating that "quite a lot of general interpretation hinges" upon it. He also suggests adding a few words on the role of London and "the possibility of further division" [of minting?]. He mentions an "enclosed list", but there is no list associated with the letter. In two postscripts, he thanks IS for "the impressive Scottish offprints" and notes that he has "encl. some Offan fragments".
