Letter from Mary Yule to Lord Stewartby with attachments:
(a) letter, typescript, single page, dated 11 June 2002, asking Lord Stewartby to provide her committee with his expert opinion on an application from the British Museum for a grant towards the acquisition of the David Rogers collection of English silver halfpennies and farthings, which will be considered on 17 June. The letter requests the return of the photographs.
(b) grant application to the Art Fund, typescript form completed partly in manuscript and partly in typescript (photocopy), three pages, undated but marked "RECEIVED 30 May 2002", plus one further page with a photocopy of a letter from Mary Sinclair, Spink, to Andrew Burnett, Curator of Coins and Medals, British Museum, typescript, dated 30 May 2002, all on two folios (recto & verso). The application provides the applicants' details, describes the coins in general terms, gives valuations, explains other funding being sought for their acquisition, specifies the amount requested, and then provides supporting statements that give a more detailed description of the coins and explain their importance and the reasons for wishing to acquire them. The letter from Mary Sinclair values the 1360 coins at £98,800 based on the sheer number of items, the many rarities in the collection and the overall condition and quality of the coins. She describes the collection as "a 'unique' accumulation of the often elusive small coinage" that, were it to be dispersed, "would be almost impossible for any collector to replicate".
(c) listing of the 1360 coins, typescript, thirty-eight pages on as many folios (recto & verso), undated and unattributed.
(d) photographic sheet, A4, showing "Selection from the Rogers Collection I", five coins from the Viking period to Edward III.
(e) photographic sheet, A4, showing "Selection from the Rogers Collection II", six coins from Edward III to Henry VII.
(f) photographic sheet, A4, showing "Selection from the Rogers Collection III", four coins from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I.
(g) photographic sheet, A4, showing "Selection from the Rogers Collection IV", three coins of James I, Charles I and the Commonwealth.
(h-j) set of three small photographs, each showing six coins.
