Three letters from Martin Allen, the last one with two attachments:
(a) typescript, single page, dated 5 October 1988, thanking IS for his letter about MRA's paper on the class V short-cross coinage and advising that he would like to submit it to the BNJ after receiving comments. He asks IS to see his paper on the chronology of the class V coinage to understand whether IS's arguments preempt or anticipate his own. The letter takes up only half the page; the rest is occupied by annotation in the hand of IS.
(b) typescript, single page, dated 29 October 1988, thanking IS for allowing him to see IS's class V paper. He says that he is impressed by the paper but does not agree with all the ideas that it puts forward, noting in particular that he has found no support for IS's views regarding the Lincoln evidence among his peers. He concludes by expressing the hope that it will be possible for them to publish their class V papers together, as "they would both benefit from the association".
(c) typescript, single page, dated 17 December 1988, with two attachments, advising IS that he is not yet able to send him a revised version of his article on Short Cross class V, but suggests that IS may be interested to see the section on chronology, attached, which is reading for inspection. He notes that the revision of this section takes account of IS's views and that he would be prepared to make further revisions in the event that IS is uncertain about publishing his arguments on the subject. The attachments are:
(i) Martin Allen's section on chronology for his draft paper on the short-cross class V coinage.
(ii) notes on obverse die counts for the class V coinage, evidently in the hand of IS.
