Letter from Martin Allen, manuscript, single page, dated 18 October 1977, thanking Ian Stewart for the photographs of his Carlisle and Durham short-cross pence, most of which were die-duplicates of coins that MRA had already seen. There were two coins from dies with which he was not familiar, one was a [type] Ib with the reverse legend ALAIN.ON.CAR from a reverse die that was new to him and the other a [type] Ic that seemed to be from completely new dies. The former was of further interest because it was from the same obverse die as the coin that [L. A.] Lawrence believed to be a Ib/Ia "mule". MRA also commented on a [type] VIIa from Durham, which he described as an early striking from the earlier of the two Durham obverse dies and the only one of three reverse dies not yet found coupled with the later obverse die. In closing, he asked IS for the weights of his coins.
