Scope and content

Letter from Jørgen Steen Jensen, in typescript, dated 15 March 1978 (a), in reply to a letter that IS had originally addressed to Dr [Otto] Mørkholm, in manuscript, dated 6 March 1978 (b), a photocopy of which is attached. In his letter, IS requested a cast and/or photograph of a coin from the Thomsen collection, no. 2555, for his work on foreign imitations of Scottish coins for the Grierson festschrift. IS also requested complete information of the Anglo-Saxon component of the Munkegaard hoard, since SCBI Copenhagen, vol. I, p. 28, states that the hoard contained 169 coins of Æthelred II but vol. II, p. xiii, listed only about 80 of them. In his reply, JSJ promised to prepare photographs of Thomsen 2555 and advised IS that Dr [Georg] Galster had prepared an inventory of Viking hoards from Bornholm, which was then in press for the next volume of NNÅ (1977-1978). JSJ looked into the matter, stating that the Æthelred coins amounted to 161 but that, apart from the examples in the Sylloge, he was able to trace only five others held by another department of the museum.
