Scope and content
Written from London. Is aware that The Courier newspaper, formerly radical and now conservative, is nearly defunct and Mr. Tillett, the owner, wishes to sell it. The radicals have offered to repurchase it. However, Manners feels it could quite easily be turned into a church newspaper or at least relating to the Universities and the church at large. It could be a platform from which churchmen can broadcast their honest opinions on subjects. The want of such a paper was demonstrated during the Cathedral struggle. Could French see what support could be gathered in Cambridge for such a paper? A Cochrane has offered Tillett £200 a year. Asks French to send him a list of potential subscribers in ten days time.
