Letter from J. P. Birkett to William French, written from the Old Ship Hotel, Brighton. Asks the Master for his opinion on the subject of appointing a mathematical lecturer. If Dixon resides, Birkett assumes it proper to offer the position to him. If not Dixon, Birkett recommends Rohrs. Hope he didn't mind him appointing an agent to act as a proxy for French at the last meeting of the Eastern Counties Railway Proprietors. The meeting passed off favourably to the Cambridge and Lincoln line. J. Cartmell informs Birkett that a good understanding now exists between Hudson (on behalf of the West Midlands), the Eastern Counties and the Cambridge & Lincoln, in favour of the better line. Hopes French is benefitting from his sojourn to Ryde.
