Letter from J. P. Birkett to William French, written from Jesus College. Still unable to locate the Dean of Ely. Woodham is almost sure the Dean is in residence and Woodham and Gibson talk of going to Ely to see. He has heard that Budd of Pembroke is going to the Bar so not likely to reside. Birkett's brother thinks they will not find anyone better for the job than Austin at Peterhouse of whom Cookson gives a very high character. Birkett highly values Cookson's opinion. The Pembroke men have a very high opinion of Gates who was 10th wrangler and, like Austin, is a good Classical scholar. Austin was 8th wrangler and two years senior to Gates. Both are competent to give classical lectures. The Bishop of Ely visits Cambridge the following day to consecrate the new church.
