Letter from J. Gibson to William French, written from Jesus College, Cambridge. Received a communication from Mr. C. Humfrey concerning a farm in lately held by Humfrey's brother, about which Gibson wanted to ask French for advice. Humfrey does not have confidence in his nephew to be able to pay the rent on the farm. As such, Humfrey has asked he rent the farm from the College so that he can effectively become his nephew's landlord. Asked if rent could be reduced to 4 bushels and acre from 4½ bushels an acre. If no change though he wouldn't take on the farm. What should he do? Includes extract from original lease concerning rent. Mr Emson has agreed to survey the Eltisley farm. Terms of new lease for that farm should coincide with Michaelmas to avoid any difficulties around crops for the outgoing tenant. Query about Rustat Accounts in that £8 5s should be added to the College chest but that he does not find it claimed by French for the College in the account French has in College. Audit should take place soon. Sorry to hear French is still not feeling well.
