Letter from Humphrey Sutherland, in typescript, dated 28 October 1961, thanking IS for his appreciation of the standard of coin description in the Crondall hoard monograph and evidently responding to specific queries about the hoard. There are four attachments:
(a) two photographs of gold coin with mount showing the die axis to be 0ยบ; one of the photos shows the obverse with stylised bust to right and the other shows the reverse with cross on steps. There is no other specific information about the coin associated with the letter or the other attachments.
(b) Philip Grierson, "Book review: C. H. V. Sutherland, Ango-Saxon gold coinage in the light of the Crondall hoard (London: Oxford University Press, 1948)", Estratto da Numismatica, vol. 1, no. 6 (1949).
(c) Plates I-IV, Grantley Collection, Second Sale, showing gold coins, but without written descriptions.
(d) Cuttings from Sotheby sale, 9 October 1979, lot 119, showing "A highly important Anglo-Saxon [gold] thrymsa", described as unique, with (i) the textual description, (ii) images at actual size and (iii) enlarged images in separate cuttings.
