Letter from George Otter to William French, written from the rectory at Newmarket. Says he has been curate of Newmarket for about 5 months. Following the surrender of the living of the parish from Mr. Bankes to the Duke of Rutland, Otter believes he is likely to be thrown out of the rectory and replaced by whoever the Duke appoints. As such he applied to the Bishop of Norwich for the perpetual curacy of All Saints, Newmarket. As such he requires references, something which Mr. Weatherby, one of the principal parishioners, has started. The Bishop of Norwich also has testimonials of Otter's clerical neighbours in Bedfordshire after he was there for 6 years. Despite, all this, he asks French if he could add his name to the testimonials basing it on his recollection of Otter's time in College. If he could mention his firsts, one in Latin and another for mathematics, that would be excellent. Also his position in the Tripos. Wants to also ask the Duke of Rutland for the living of Newmarket St. Mary's cum Wood Ditton. Mentions that any references can be sent to the Bishop of Norwich at 12 Hereford Street, London.
