Letter from F Elmore Jones, in manuscript, dated 20 October 1953 (a), complimenting IS on his notes and asking him when he would like to collect his Sanford Saltus medal. There is a brief discussion of the sequencing of [short-cross?] types and reference to an upcoming short-cross "get together". The attachment, in two different manuscript hands, undated (b), appears unrelated to the letter. It shows a sketch of a coin legend from the reverse of a broken William I type V penny. There follows a brief note, in the hand of Ian Stewart, stating that PAERN or PUFRIC (Wulfric) have been suggested as moneyer but the mint remains an utter mystery. Below that, in bold red script consistent with that of Elmore Jones is the note "6 fragments (incomplete)", followed by a further note in pencil, signed "F. J." complimenting the reproduction but admitting that the solution [to the questions of moneyer and mint], in the absence of another example, is guesswork. There are a few annotations on the verso.
