Scope and content
Letter from Christopher Challis, manuscript, single page, dated 30 May 1998, with attachment, in reply to a query from IS about a claim that CEC made in his book Tudor Coinage. Because the trial of the pyx on one occasion concerned only groats and half-groats, CEC supposes that only these denominations were struck during the period in question. The attachment, in manuscript, two pages on two folios (recto only), undated, is a photocopy of a transcription from the Public Record Office, Exchequer, Accounts various, Mint, E101/302/17, dated 26 October 1523, which concerned the assay of silver coined in the Tower [of London] between 1 June 1522 and 26 October 1523, amounting to £7.16s. in groats and half-groats.
