Scope and content

Letter from Christopher Brooke, in typescript, single page, dated 13 March 1985, labelled confidential, making reference to an enclosure, expressing regret that he will not be able to attend an upcoming Sylloge [Committee meeting] but giving assurances that Philip [Grierson] will be there and noting that Henry [Loyn?] and Christopher [Blunt?] "have copies of this letter". CNLB is hopeful that the College [i.e. Gonville & Caius] will give its support [to the Medieval European Coinage project] as long as the Academy does.
There are two attachments:
(a) photocopy of a letter, to the Master, Fitzwilliam College [i.e. J. C. Holt, FBA, FRHistS], in typescript, single page, dated 11 March 1985, labelled confidential, responding to a [British] Academy circular that invited suggestions for projects that deserve substantial funding and putting forward Philip Grierson's Medieval European Coinage project as a candidate. The photocopy includes a manuscript note in the lower margin to indicate that copies were sent to the Master, Gonville & Caius College (Prof. H. W. R. Wade) and to Prof. Henry Loyn. There is a further addition to the photocopy, in pencil, above the salutation, to indicate that James Holt was "Chairman of Sc. 2" [of the British Academy?].
(b) note from Philip [Grierson], in manuscript, on a cutting of paper, undated, labelled "2" but lacking any first page, giving an account of "a totally unsatisfactory meeting with the Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum" regarding the position of Mark Blackburn [as his research assistant in the Medieval European Coinage project].
