Scope and content
Letter from Bill Seaby with attachments:
(a) letter, carbon-copy typescript, two pages on two folios (recto only), dated 1 October 1969, entitled "Henry III Irish long-cross coinages", updating IS on the progress in his work on the Brussels hoard in comparison with the Colchester hoard, showing that the similarities between the two hoards in terms of composition are astonishing. There is a line of text that is struck-through and some of the figures have been altered. There were originally four attachments associated with the letter, but the letter makes no specific reference to them. Attachment 1 is a copy of a letter from WAS to David Sellwood, which is catalogued elsewhere (see JCPP/Stewartby/1/3/SEABYW-SELLWOOD/1969/1).
(b) attachment 2, carbon-copy typescript, five-page table on five large folios (recto only), entitled "Colchester Hoard (Irish portion), the purpose of which is to delineate dies and die combinations and compare the figures between two hoards, Colchester and Brussels, and with another groups of similar coin types from miscellaneous sources called "Omnium Gatherum". Near the upper left corner on the first page of the table, there is the faint residue of an encircled note reading "MD copy", in pencil, which has been eraced. On the last page, there is a note explaining that "As of 1 July 1969 grand total of coins examined: 2219".
(c) attachment 3, carbon-copy typescript, three pages on three large folios (recto only) with each page showing a distinct table but all bearing the same main title: "Henry III Irish long-cross coinage: comparison of composition in the Brussels hoard and in the Colchester hoard (as of 31 August 1969)".
(d) attachment 4, table on a single page, entitled "Henry III Irish long-cross coinage: "Omnium Gatherum" consisting of coins from miscellaneous sources but excluding the Brussels and Colchester hoards (as of 31 August 1969)".
