Scope and content

Letter from Anthony Thompson to Elmore Jones, manuscript (copy), two pages on two folios (recto only), dated 19 May 1959, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to discuss [Anglo-]Saxon coins with FEJ before launching into the main subject of his letter. He says that he has been reading Jones' article on 'Stephen type VII' and wishes to offer one suggestions. He believes that the mint of CIPEI (Cipem or Ciper) doesn't fit with Ipswich but wonders whether FEJ has ever considered Chippenham in Wiltshire, providing various medieval spellings. He notes that 'Chipping' is often interpreted to mean "Market" or "Market town". Although coins with a Scandinavian provenance are more likely to have come from East Anglia than Wiltshire, but he notes that Stanley Abbey (near Chippenham in Wiltshire) was founded by Empress Matilda.
