Scope and content
"Circling the Square", by Stewart Lyon and Peter Sawyer, typescript (photocopy), single page, dated 14 July 1963, which considers how Anglo-Saxon mints managed to produce coins in bulk that were consistently within ten per cent of the theoretical weight standard and outlines the system that they might have employed. In a postscript, the authors ask whether the method that they describe might have originated on the Continent and, furthermore, whether it underlay the transition from the sceatta to penny-sized flans.
