Counterpart Lease

Lease by the College to nine named parishioners of a shop adjoining the north side of the steeple of the church and of a piece of waste land adjoining the south side of the church. Term 40 years, to be renewed every 40 years for 200 years; rent 4d per annum. The parishioners are to erect a shop on the waste ground, and to sublet the two shops, so that the rents will provide for an annual distribution of 13s 4d to the poor of the parish, the bequest of William Ridscall. The distribution is to be made at Christmas (5s) Easter (5s) and St Luke's Day (18 Oct.).

Poor rate: counsels' opinions

There are four colleges in the parish, whose servants gain settlements and are a financial burden, the colleges pay very little. The opinion of counsel was sought to see if the colleges are liable to pay Poor Rate. The opinion was that they are not liable if they are extra-parochial. Parishes should ask the colleges to obtain for them a greater proportion of the money paid by the University to the colleges in lieu of rates.

Augmentation of the living

Letters concerning the transfer of £500 in stock to Queen Anne's Bounty in 1888 [from the Proby Fund], and a temporary grant by the Ecclesistical Commission in 1910.

Financial papers and draft presentation

Valuations of the benefice 1914, 1917, drafts for the presentation of a vicar, and further valuations. In 1920 the Vicar asked permission to sell glebe lands in Over and Swavesey: the College's consent to this is missing, though mentioned in the typescript list.

Proposed union with St Giles

Correspondence about a proposed union with the parish of St Giles, opposed by the parishioners. Also a description of the demolition of the spire during stormy weather in 1928.

Augmentation of living

Correspondence with the Ecclesiastical Commissioners about augmenting the living on the ground of population. Most of the correspondence is from 1931, and includes statements of existing income and the decision of the Commissioners to make a grant of £119 per annum in augmentation of the living. There is a letter from the Revd Percy Sharp in Birmingham, interested in the living but unable to afford it (pre-augmentation), and an exchange of letters with the Clergy Pension Board about the effect of a pension for Canon Wood on the income of the living. In 1933 there is a letter from the Commissioners to the Revd J.T. Plowden-Wardlaw, informing him of an increase to the living, and in 1941 a formal statement that the benefice has become vacant by the resignation of J.T. Plowden-Wardlaw.

Repairs to chancel roof

Brief notes on necessary repairs in 1931 by Messrs Rattee and Kett: £25 to mend broken Tenons to the Purlins and add iron plates; and by Coulson &Son Lts in 1936: £56.13.6 to re-lathe and re-tile north side of chancel roof.

Estimates for a water supply

A batch of letters and estimates,clipped together, for providing a water supply for the Vicarage, by sinking an Artesian Well, and supplying a pump.. There are estimates and letters from Le Grand, Sutcliff & Gell Ltd, of Southall, October-November 1921, and the same from Charles Lack & Sons Ltd, of Cottenham, July-August 1922. At the top of the batch is a letter from Queen Anne's Bounty 21 July 1921, with loan application papers. See file 4/8, which shows that the work went ahead

Installation of electricity at the vicarage

Estimates for the installation of electicity, and discussion of the division of costs between the Vicar (Edward Buswell), the College (W.L.H. Duckworth, Bursar, and P. Gardner Smith), and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The installation was apparently not done until 1945, no doubt because of the war.

Augmentation of the living

Consent of Queen Anne's Bounty to accept £2,000 3% consols from the Proby Fund as an augmentation of the living.
